Ward Memorial Theater
The Ward Memorial Theater, designed by Henry C. Koch and completed in 1881-1882, served as the vibrant cultural center of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home for over a century.
Architectural Splendor
Built in the High Victorian Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival styles, this magnificent structure showcased Koch's talent for creating buildings that were both functional and beautiful. The theater's polychromatic design reflected the exuberant architectural trends of the late 19th century.
Entertainment for Heroes
The Ward Memorial Theater hosted an impressive array of entertainment for the veteran residents. Famous performers graced its stage, including Will Rogers, Bob Hope, George Jessel, Burns and Allen, Sophie Tucker, Nat King Cole, and a young Liberace from nearby West Allis.
Multi-Purpose Facility
Beyond theatrical performances, the building served multiple functions including an amusement hall, restaurant, commissary store, post office, and even a railroad passenger station for the line that ran adjacent to the campus.
Restoration and Future
Currently undergoing restoration as part of Phase 2 of the historic preservation efforts, the Ward Memorial Theater will soon return to active use, hosting community theater productions, musical performances, and educational programs for veterans and the public.
